Impact investing (also referred to as “social finance”, “social impact investing”, “blended value investing” or “impact finance”) has gained significant momentum in recent years. As we move through the first quarter of the twenty-first century, this is perhaps the biggest idea to renew the relevance of finance for the real economy and social progress. Estimates indicate that impact investing could become a new asset class or investment style that will grow to USD 1 trillion by the end of the decade. Paralleling the emergence of impact investing, research is proliferating. It aims to understand the phenomenon and strengthen the market building process currently underway. At Impact Economy, we have worked on impact investing with a variety of clients and partners since the inception of the firm with our dedicated “making impact investible” team. It is now time to take stock and ask how we can seize the potential and leverage impact investing to make a meaningful difference in the challenges facing our generation. Accordingly, this working paper reviews the state of action in impact investing, its potential for mainstreaming and the pathways for doing so.

Sin embargo, mientras que el sector social es grande y creciente, sigue siendo muy fragmentado – tanto para los emprendedores sociales, como para las organizaciones más clásicas sin fines de lucro. Una pregunta clave sigue siendo: ¿Cómo financiar a los empresarios sociales de forma eficiente? Hay un gran entusiasmo por la inversión de impacto y las finanzas sociales, pero esto se enfrenta a una dificultad práctica de las transacciones de abastecimiento suficiente para hacer un gran número de vehículos de inversión social viable sobre la base del “no-subsidio”. Se necesitan pasos adicionales para traducir el potencial de mercado en inversiones reales. Non-profit and philanthropic leaders across a broad front have now incorporated the social entrepreneurship label into their work, as social entrepreneurship has been “mainstreamed” and integrated into global consciousness. Notwithstanding, a key question remains: how to fund social entrepreneurs efficiently? There is great enthusiasm for impact investing and social finance, however this compares to a practical difficulty of sourcing enough quality transactions to render a large number of social investment vehicles viable on a non-subsidy basis today. Additional steps are needed to translate market potential into actual investments.To get a practical sense of the true potential of hybrid financing strategies for social entrepreneurs, this new Impact Economy Working Paper develops an evidence-based framework, derived from the empirical analysis of the financing approach of a number of widely recognized social entrepreneurs.

The paper identifies and analyzes the four main fault lines which will influence the next decades of global philanthropy. All are related to what we can refer to as "the market revolution in global philanthropy". As global philanthropy moves beyond grantmaking, into investment approaches that produce a social as well as a financial return, this accelerates the mainstreaming of a variety of what used to be niche activities. The discussion focuses on 4 key theatres - the 4 Revolutions that will radically transform the philanthropic sector.

Globalization, long-term demographic trends, changing consumer preferences, and the state of public finances are driving the emergence of an Impact Economy for the first time in human history. Beyond both profit and philanthropy, what does it mean to be a part of the Impact Economy? How it will change the way we consume, invest and work?
